If you have a Duke Energy bill in front of you and just want to pay it, the short version is this: sign in to your Duke Energy account on the website or the Duke Energy app, pick your payment method, and confirm. Everything else on this page is about the other options, what changes depending on your state, and what to do if you can’t cover the bill this month.
Duke Energy serves customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Payment tools are broadly similar across those areas, but some pages and programs are state-specific, so the website will ask for your location or address first.
Ways to pay a Duke Energy bill
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Online account | Most people | View your bill and pay from your account on duke-energy.com. |
| Duke Energy app | Paying from your phone | View and pay your bill, set payment reminders, schedule automatic payments and check billing history. |
| Auto Pay (Automatic Payment Plan) | Never missing a due date | Duke Energy says the plan is free. Residential customers can choose a draft date 10 to 24 days after the bill date. |
| In person | Paying cash or without internet | Duke Energy lists preferred payment locations; you enter your address to find the nearest one and bring your account number. |
| Pay as guest | Paying without signing in | The Pay Bill page offers a “Pay as Guest” option next to sign in. |
| By phone | One-time, same-day payments | Duke Energy lists Speedpay, a third-party vendor, with a different number by state (see the table below). |
| By mail | Checks and money orders | Duke Energy lists Duke Energy, P.O. Box 1094, Charlotte, NC 28201-1094 on the pay-bill page for all six states. |
Duke Energy says its pay-by-phone service is run by a third-party vendor, so read any fee shown before you confirm. Phone numbers differ by state, so use the table below, and check your own bill if anything looks different.
Paying online or in the app
- Go to duke-energy.com or open the Duke Energy app.
- Sign in. If you don’t have an account yet, you’ll need your account number from a recent bill.
- Open your bill and choose a payment amount and method.
- Review any fee shown, confirm, and save the confirmation.
The app also lets you set reminders, which is handy if you tend to forget due dates.
Duke Energy payment details by state
Duke Energy’s Pay Bill page changes by location. This is what each state’s page listed when I checked on November 3, 2026. All six showed the same options: sign in, pay as guest, the app, in-person locations, pay by phone and mail.
| State | Pay by phone (Speedpay, third-party) | Mail a check to |
|---|---|---|
| North Carolina (Duke Energy Carolinas) | 800-777-9898 | P.O. Box 1094, Charlotte, NC 28201-1094 |
| South Carolina (Duke Energy Carolinas) | 800-777-9898 | P.O. Box 1094, Charlotte, NC 28201-1094 |
| Florida | 800-700-8744 | P.O. Box 1094, Charlotte, NC 28201-1094 |
| Indiana | 800-521-2232 | P.O. Box 1094, Charlotte, NC 28201-1094 |
| Ohio | 800-544-6900 | P.O. Box 1094, Charlotte, NC 28201-1094 |

Duke Energy Progress areas: parts of North Carolina and South Carolina are served by Duke Energy Progress, and Duke Energy’s site treats it as a separate area. I did not check that version of the page, so use the phone number and address printed on your own bill if you are a Progress customer.
Setting up Auto Pay
Duke Energy’s Automatic Payment Plan pulls your payment on a date you choose. According to Duke Energy, you’ll know enrollment is complete when your bill shows “To be drafted on or after” a date. Until you see that, keep paying the old way. The draft date can shift from month to month because meter reading dates vary, and if it lands on a weekend or holiday the draft happens on the next business day.
One practical tip: make sure your bank balance is there before the draft date, because a failed payment can lead to bank or late charges.
Paying in person
Duke Energy has a payment-locations search where you enter your address to find nearby preferred locations. Have your account number ready. The page I checked did not list fees or hours, so call the location first and ask what they accept and when they close.
If you can’t pay this month
Duke Energy’s Pay Bill page lists these billing help options: installment plans for a past-due balance, due date extensions of up to 10 business days, and disconnect extensions that add five business days. It also has a payment assistance finder and information for customers with medically essential needs. Contact Duke Energy before your due date to ask what you qualify for. Local programs also help, and they differ by state:
- Carolinas: Share the Warmth.
- Florida and parts of the Carolinas (Progress Energy areas): the Neighbor Fund; the CARELINE number listed by Duke Energy is 800-662-7030.
- Indiana: Helping Hand, with help of up to $300 listed.
- Kentucky: WinterCare, up to $300 listed, 859-581-6607.
- Ohio: HeatShare through The Salvation Army, up to $400 listed.
- Anywhere: dial 2-1-1 to find local help.
Program amounts, dates and eligibility change, so confirm with the program. For a bigger picture, see our guide to help paying utility bills.
Avoid payment scams
Scammers often pose as utility workers and threaten an immediate shutoff unless you pay by gift card, wire or crypto. A real utility will not demand that. If you get a call like this, hang up and contact Duke Energy using the number on your bill or the official website. Also read our guide to third-party bill pay sites before paying through any site that isn’t Duke Energy’s own.
